Description

This monograph of the series “Fauna Ibérica” is devoted to the nematode orders, Mononchida and Dorylaimida. The orders, which share a recent common ancestry, are widely distributed and abundant in both soils and sediments of epicontinental water habitats. These free-living nematodes are often used as bioindicators of the quality of the environments they inhabit.
In the Iberian-Balearic region, the order Mononchida is represented by 4 families, 8 genera and 29 species. Also considered in this volume, are 3 (Nygolaimoidea, Belondiroidea and Tylencholaimoidea) of the 4 superfamilies into which the order Dorylaimida is divided (the superfamily Dorylaimoidea will be the subject of another volume). In our geographical area Dorylaimida is represented by 6 families, 22 genera and 74 species.
Although the two orders are dealt with separately, their analysis is preceded by a review of the general morphology of the adult and the natural history of the group along with a description of the methods most widely used for their collection, conservation and analysis. This is followed by diagnoses of supraspecific taxa, identification keys to the species level, and descriptions, including dimensions, and illustrations of each of the Iberian-Balearic species.
This publication, the first of its kind in Spanish, is a novel contribution to the current body of knowledge on these nematodes and will certainly be considered a reference in its field for future studies.
