This monograph of the Fauna Ibérica series begins the study of the superfamily Apoidea (bees in the broader sense), insects who feed basically on the nectar and pollen of higher plants. Bees are essential pollinating agents for a great number of wild, as well as, cultivated plant species. Bees are often bred in artificial hives to be used as pollinators and to produce honey, pollen, royal jelly, etc. This first book contains a General Introduction to the group and a detailed study of the Colletidae, Melittidae and Apidae families. The Introduction offers both a general perspective of the superfamiliy, with special reference to Iberian Fauna, and a glossary and identification key of the different families, useful for both the lay person and the specialist. Additionally, each chapter contains morphological descriptions of the family, data on their distribution and ecology, keys for identifying the (ir) Iberian taxa (representatives). Each part contains an ample bibliography and ends with a revision of the nomenclature. This volume is richly illustrated with various photographs, and with more than 600 drawings on 91 plates.
