Description

The present work is a compilation of biliographic information forming the basis of a monographic study of the family Elateridae (Coleoptera) for the series Iberian Fauna. It has been neccesary to search and retrieve thoroughly a great amount of information scattered about in numerous works on this inscects, wich have never been the subject of comprehensive studies in the Iberian and Balearican area. The only previous listing dates from 1929-30 and has become completely outdated. After presenting the historical background of the study of this group and the bibliographic search methodology, the main bulk of the work is composed of the list of species. The catalogue in the strict sense includes 183 species. Twenty eight others are considered erroneous records for the area under consideration and 20 are mentioned because they were recorded for the French Pyrenees. Apart from the actual drawing up of the list, the work served to resolve many questions and many nomenclatural errors that had been perpetuated for a long time.
