Description

In spite of its great interest , the knowledge of the marin e fauna in the south of the Iberian Peninsula is inadequate and fragmentary. An oceanographic expedition (FAUNA I) was carried out, seeking to improve the knowledge about this fauna and hoping to provide a general overview of the biota from this area. Samples were taken in the Gulf of Cádiz, Gibraltar Strait and on the Spanish coast of the Alboran Sea, including the area surrounding the Alboran Island and the "Bajos de Motril".

This book includes a brief description of the area and its hydrographic characteristics, a review of previous studies on the marine fauna of this area, exhibition of the methods and sampling sites, and finally, a sinthesis of the results obtained till now.

A total of 60 benthic samples, between 15 and 550 meters in depth and 20 pelagic samples were collected. As a result, more than 25.000 specimens belonging to more than 1.000 species were collected, some of them being new to science. The book includes comments on the different animal groups and records of 107 species of Porifera, 26 of Cnidaria, 5 of Sipuncula, 1 of Echiura, 1 of Hirudinea, 8 of Polichaeta, 31 of Bivalvia, 123 of Gastropoda ( 91 of Prosobranchia and 32 of Opisthobranchia), 17 of Cephalopoda, 85 of Crustacea Decapoda, 2 of Stomatopoda, 1 of Eufausiacea, 16 of Pantopoda, 112 of Bryozoa, 1 of Branchiopoda, 40 of Echinodermata, 7 of Tunicata, 1 of Cephalochordata and 75 of Pisces. Other species, also included, are classified at generic level.

In addition more than 950 slides, corresponding to 242 different species were obtained . Five hours of video were filmed on live animals, sampling methods and other activities. With this material a 35 minute video film was produced. Drafts of the animals included 79 species of gastropods, many of them previously known only by their shells.

The book also provides information on the marine animal communities found in the study area: infralittoral and circalittoral hard bottoms, coastal detritic bottoms , detritic bottoms of the shelfledge, muddy bottoms with gravel, terrigenous muddy bottoms and bathyal muddy bottoms.
